The horse chestnut is a very ancient plant, native to the northern part of the Balkan peninsula, but today it is cultivated and widespread in all temperate areas in Europe, including Italy. The fruits are reminiscent of chestnuts, but are not suitable for food, as they are toxic to humans.

If from a nutritional point of view the horse chestnut fruits represent a product of little interest, they are instead extremely useful in the phytotherapeutic and cosmetic fields.
